Microcement – Why It’s Gaining Popularity

What are the advantages and disadvantages of microcement flooring and wall coverings? On which surfaces can microcement be applied? How much does the material cost, and what is the installation price? What colors are available for microcement today?

Microcement, initially ideal as an industrial floor covering due to its characteristics, is now a highly attractive solution for both floors and walls in various types of buildings, including the most prestigious ones. It is also a practical and economical solution for renovating existing and older structures.

What is Microcement?

Microcement is a natural, cement-based material that, thanks to certain additives, boasts excellent physical and mechanical properties. Its natural shade is gray, similar to concrete, but today various pigments can be added to microcement, making the color choices practically limitless.
Depending on the final treatment, the surface texture of microcement can vary, allowing it to be customized for specific purposes or desired aesthetic effects.

Microcement can have a matte or glossy finish, with the final look depending on the sealants used and whether the surface is sanded or polished. This wide range of surface textures makes microcement suitable for different applications. For instance, a glossy microcement is ideal for bathrooms, while a rougher texture is more suitable for exterior surfaces to prevent slipperiness during winter months and rain.

How is Microcement Applied?

Microcement is applied in two layers, whether for floors or walls. Before the first layer of microcement, a suitable primer is applied depending on the type of surface. The first layer of microcement is then applied.
Once it dries, it is sanded and vacuumed to remove dust, followed by another layer of primer and the second layer of microcement. After the second layer dries, it is sanded or polished, and appropriate sealants are applied.

By adding pigments to microcement, the creative possibilities become enormous

This two-layer application process creates a thickness of two to four millimeters. For floor coverings, this method is effective if the surface is flat and well-leveled. There are also self-leveling microcement floors, poured in thicknesses up to 1,5 inch.
Although this method uses more material and is thus more expensive, it offers greater mechanical resistance and serves both as a final and leveling layer, speeding up the installation process.

Applying microcement results in a layer about four millimeters thick, which is very practical for installing over existing floors without altering floor height significantly, often eliminating the need for additional modifications like door trimming.

Suitable Surfaces for Microcement Application

One of the key reasons for microcement’s popularity is its suitability for various surfaces. It can be applied over concrete, both on floors and walls, provided the surface is dry and offers good mechanical support.
If applying over old ceramic tiles, the tiles must be firmly attached without any loose pieces.

The surface should also be flat and free of cracks to ensure an even microcement layer. When applied over tiles, such as in a bathroom, microcement creates a smooth, waterproof surface without grout lines, making it easy to maintain. Additionally, a microcement bathroom floor and walls provide an aesthetically appealing monolithic look.

Microcement is not only used for covering floors

Before applying microcement, a professional will assess the surface to ensure proper adhesion. Sometimes, other materials may be needed to prepare or level the surface. One ideal surface for microcement is drywall, allowing for a concrete-like appearance. However, a layer of joint compound is not recommended as it may lose adhesion when exposed to moisture from the microcement.

How Much Does Microcement Installation Cost?

The cost of installing microcement depends significantly on the type of materials used and the time required to prepare the surface. Therefore, it’s challenging to specify an exact cost for microcement floor and wall coverings. However, prices generally range from $5 to $20 per square foot.

Microcement offers a versatile, durable, and aesthetically pleasing solution for modern interiors and exteriors. By understanding its application process, suitable surfaces, and costs, you can make an informed decision for your next renovation project.
