How to Choose and Whether to Buy a Water Filtration Pitcher

Water quality is a constant topic of discussion. One of the common debates is whether it’s worth buying and bringing bottled water, or if tap water is completely satisfactory for drinking. No one can answer that question with certainty.

The only thing that is certain is that in some cities, drinking water is definitely not safe. But even in places where the municipal water supply delivers satisfactory quality water, the question remains: what exactly comes out of your tap? Has the water picked up any impurities along the way, are the pipes metal or plastic… Has the water been sitting in pipes for hours and arrived in your glass when you turned on the tap… There are many unknowns.

Most filters work based on activated carbon.

In addition to buying bottled water, and questioning its quality, one solution for drinking water can be water filtration pitchers. These are simple and affordable devices that can effectively eliminate a large number of impurities from water.

They usually use activated charcoal filters that remove chlorine, rust, pesticides, heavy metals, phenol, petroleum derivatives. They also reduce the amount of limescale.

A large number of various models are offered on the market in specialized stores of household appliances, and the approximate price range of more affordable solutions is from 10 to 5o dollars. More or less, the system and quality of water filtration are similar in all these models, and when choosing, attention should be paid to some other parameters.

Assess the volume of the water filtration pitcher you need.

For example, pay attention to whether the volume suits you. Because a larger volume pitcher will not be necessary if you live alone, but it will certainly be necessary for a family of five. Then check if the pitcher can fit in the refrigerator door, if that is important to you during the summer months.
Keeping the pitcher in the refrigerator is good because it reduces the possibility of bacteria formation, especially when temperatures are high.

When it comes to hygiene, most pitchers can be washed in dishwashers, but the problem is that lids cannot be placed in dishwashers, so they need to be washed by hand. The problem is that some lids are equipped with a battery-operated timer that shows when it is time to replace the filter.

For most models, this is just an extra, because the timer on cheaper models simply counts the days, not the liters of filtered water, and in the end notifies you that it is time to replace the filter, completely unrelated to how much water has passed through the filter.

How often are filters replaced?

Therefore, it may be better for you to take care of replacing the filter yourself, at least for cheaper models. If the filter can purify aprox. 40 to 50 gallons of water, which is often the case, you roughly know the daily consumption, so change the filter accordingly.

What is very important is that after replacing the filter, the water should be filtered three times before being thrown away, and only after that is the filter ready, and the water of satisfactory quality for drinking.

The price of the filter depends on the model, and again we are talking about more affordable models whose prices we mentioned earlier, it is from 2 to 5 dollars for original filters. From this, everyone can calculate that filtering water in a pitcher is more profitable than buying bottled water, plus there is no daily hauling of balloons and bottles with water.
