How to Clean and Disinfect Your Air Conditioner

With summer temperatures approaching, if you haven’t already, you’ll soon be turning on your air conditioner. The quality of the air depends on its proper functioning and maintenance, so here are some tips on how to clean and disinfect your air conditioner

Air conditioners, due to the moisture they collect, are a favorable environment for bacteria growth, many of which can cause illnesses. Unpleasant odors are the least of your worries because a neglected air conditioner can pose health risks to household members. Of course, an unpleasant smell is a sure sign that your air conditioner is quite neglected. Don’t wait for this to happen; clean it before the first summer use. The procedure is simple and practically free:

  • Lift the Air Conditioner Cover: The cover usually opens from the bottom upwards. Grab the cover on both sides and pull gently until you feel the clips release. There’s often a safety clip in the middle of the bottom part of the cover, so gently pull the cover in that area as well to avoid breaking it. Typically, the cover has a latch, so when lifted, it stays in an upright position.
  • Remove and Wash the Filters: Once you lift the cover, you’ll see two mesh filters. You need to remove both. To remove the filter, lift the bottom part of the mesh upward a few centimeters to release it from its housing, then slowly pull it downwards. Be careful because the filter is usually full of dust and sometimes insects. If there’s an additional smaller filter, remove it too.
  • Wash the Filters Carefully: Wash the filters in the bathtub. First, rinse off any dirt with a strong stream of warm water from the shower. Then, create a lather with soap or dishwashing detergent and gently scrub the mesh, then rinse well again. Shake off excess water and gently pat them dry with an absorbent cloth.
  • Inspect the Inside of the Air Conditioner: While the filters are drying, inspect the interior of the air conditioner. If you notice any dirt, vacuum it with a vacuum cleaner. Be very careful; the interior of the air conditioner is delicate and easily bent. It’s best to use a brush attachment on the vacuum hose. If you’ve purchased a disinfectant for air conditioners, spray it according to the instructions. After that, replace the mesh filters, making sure they’re properly aligned because the filters are usually not identical. Replace the cover, and your air conditioner is ready to use.
