Is WPC Decking the Right Flooring Solution for Your Terrace?

Determining when WPC (Wood-Plastic Composite) decking outshines traditional wooden decking and vice versa is crucial. Should price be the sole deciding factor? Is the maintenance-free aspect the only advantage of WPC decking, or does it come with drawbacks?

Unlike traditional wooden decking, WPC decking floorings are artificial materials composed by mixing wood flour or fibers with plastic (WPC – Wood Plastic Composite).

Thus, WPC decking, like any composite material, combines the advantages of both materials. Wood provides strength, while plastic acts as a binding agent, offering elasticity and resistance to moisture and weathering. Additionally, the fact that it is a blend of wood powder and plastic, which is then molded, gives WPC decking floorings a monolithic appearance without the irregularities often encountered with wood, such as color inconsistencies, cracks, knots, etc.

WPC decking is hard to distinguish from real wood

Depending on the buyer’s preference, this can be either an advantage or a drawback. Some prefer a uniform appearance, while others lean towards the naturalness of wood with all its irregularities.

Maintenance-Free – the Key Advantage of WPC Decking

One of the most significant advantages of WPC decking floorings is that they require no maintenance. Wooden decking needs to be coated with varnish or oil once or twice a year to retain its color and prevent cracking and warping caused by rain and sunlight. WPC decking requires no maintenance.

However, when purchasing WPC decking, attention should be paid to the manufacturer’s declaration and warranties. The most critical factor is the UV resistance certificate. This largely determines the behavior of the decking flooring over the years. If you buy a cheap product, it will lose its color after just one season in the sun, turning greyish after a few years of summer exposure.

Unlike wooden decking, nothing can be done to rectify this with WPC. Recoating is not feasible, so the only remedy is replacement.

Today, manufacturers offer warranties ranging from five to 20 years for WPC decking floorings. The advice is clear – if you can’t afford high-quality WPC decking from a reputable manufacturer, traditional wooden decking is a much better choice.

Wood is wood, so with maintenance, you can still preserve the beautiful appearance of your yard or terrace. WPC decking is the optimal choice only when purchasing verified products with UV resistance declarations and warranties.
