PFAS are a group of persistent chemicals that do not degrade, posing environmental and health risks. IKEA’s move to eliminate PFAS from their supply chain, ongoing since 2009, reflects their dedication to producing safe products and protecting both indoor and outdoor environments.

IKEA’s Commitment to Safer Cookware

PFAS (per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances) are used in various products with complex supply chains. IKEA’s long-standing efforts to phase out PFAS aim to ensure product safety and environmental care. “At IKEA, we strive to create a better everyday life for the many people, and we believe a safer life is a better life,” says Jonatan Elofsson,

Range Area Manager for Cooking & Eating at IKEA of Sweden AB. This commitment has driven IKEA to explore new non-stick coatings for their cookware range.

Introducing the Sol-Gel Ceramic Coating

The HEMKOMST, MIDDAGSMAT, and HUSKNUT ranges offer customers a diverse selection of pans and pots featuring the sol-gel ceramic non-stick coating. Sol-gel, primarily composed of silica, is applied as a gel-like solution and dried to form a hard, glossy surface with excellent non-stick properties.

This durable coating provides a viable alternative to traditional non-stick coatings such as PTFE.

Future Plans for Non-PTFE Cookware

“The new range marks the beginning of our journey to phase out PTFE in cookware and bakeware. By 2026, all our cookware and bakeware will be non-PTFE,” states Jonatan Elofsson. The HEMKOMST, MIDDAGSMAT, and HUSKNUT ranges with the new sol-gel ceramic coating will be available starting April 2024.
